After a glamorous star-studded Red Carpet, the Opening Ceremony gave the start of the 70th Festival de Cannes, a milestone edition for the greatest film festival in the world.
A unique and unusual couple, united for the occasion, declared the 70th Cannes Film Festival open: the actress Lily-Rose Depp (daughter of Vanessa Paradis and Johnny Depp) and the iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi (Best Male Actor and Scenario awards with The Client in 2016). At the end of the opening ceremony, Les Fantômes d’Ismaël (Ismaël’s Ghosts) by French director Arnaud Desplechin, starring Marion Cotillard and Charlotte Gainsbourg, was screened to the audience of the Grand Auditorium Louis Lumière.
The man who loves women
After the duo of singers Louane and Benjamin Biolay, Monica Belluci talked of the magic of Cannes where she finds her child’s gaze and welcomed that 12 selected films were made by women, and that the president of the Jury, Pedro Almodóvar, is the man who loves women.
From 17 to 28 May on the Croisette, Pedro Almodóvar, surrounded by jury members from around the world: Maren Ade (Director, Screenwriter, Producer – Germany), Jessica Chastain (Actress, Producer – USA), Fan Bingbing, (Director, Writer, Producer – South Korea), Will Smith (Actor, Producer, Musician – United States), Agnès Jaoui (Actress, Writer), Paolo Sorrentino (Director, Screenwriter – Italy), Gabriel Yared (Composer – France), will have to select the Palme d’Or and the films to complete the prize list.
Les Fantômes d’Ismaël (Ismaël Ghosts), drama by Arnaud Desplechin, 1h54.
She had disappeared for twenty years, she was thought dead and “coucou, la revoilou!” Carlotta (Marion Cotillard) returns for her husband Ismaël (Mathieu Amaric) who she seems not to have missed while she was in India. But Ismaël, suffered a lot from the disappearance of his wife. However, he built a new life with Sylvia (Charlotte Gainsbourg). At the edge of the ocean, Ismaël is a director who works on a scenario he is dreading not to complete.
Arnaud Deplechin made this film like Russian dolls. Five movies telescope into one: “like as many fictional plates that shatter on the screen. When there is no more plates, the film is finished!” Desplechin explains.
Cannes Fait le Mur
Earlier in the morning, Mayor of Cannes David Lisnard, inaugurated the exhibition Cannes Fait le Mur (Cannes Makes The Wall), by unveiling the photo installed on the pediment of Cannes City Hall in the presence of Olivier Royant, editor of Paris Match. Partner of the exhibition, Paris Match has selected a series of black and white and color photographs on the theme “70 years of festivity and happiness”, among the 15 million photos in its photo library.
Through eighteen large-format canvases of cinema celebrities, Cannes Fait le Mur retraces, from 1953 to today, “real moments”, moments of joy, laughter and happiness shared by the “vedettes”, the Cannois, the festival-goers and the public
Scattered throughout the city, unfolded on the walls, or stretched on gabled walls of buildings and the Train Station, as well as on banners in the air along the street of Antibes, these strong images of cinema will offer a share of dreams and glamor to passers-by from May 17 to August 31, 2017.
