MAPIC celebrated 20 years of dedication to the global retail real estate market and is exporting its expertise to China by creating RREM in Shanghai.
MAPIC, the leading international exhibition dedicated to retail real estate, celebrated 20 years of commitment to foster exchanges between trade professionals and developers of shopping centers. On November he fair saw the participation of 8 400 delegates from 72 countries. The sector is confident, as 500 commercial names send some 2 400 representatives to Cannes.
While e-commerce continues to grow, the physical retail remains dynamic and instead of a competition between online commerce and physical retail, the industry is moving more towards the “Phygital” favoring multi-channel strategies.
Moreover, Google has opened its first boutique in Germany last year, and Amazon would consider opening its first store in New York.
The mall developers more and more integrate some recreation facilities in or close to their centers, developing a concept of “retailtainment” to attract and retain more and more customers in the malls. Entertainment, cinemas, playgrounds for children and fitness areas, or theme park, are added to the purchase offer in a mix-use environment.
MAPIC Director Nathalie Depetro said: “The European and American markets show a high activity, thanks to the renovation and expansion of existing shopping centers, and the construction of new centers. In developing countries, especially in China, the focus is on new projects.”
The United States country of honor in 2015
The United States, the birthplace of mass merchandising, have seen the size of their delegation jump this year, with 171 companies present in Cannes, an increase of 40% compared to 2013. The US retail property sector will take center stage at MAPIC in 2015, since the United States will be the guest of honor.
