The 32nd edition of MIPCOM, from October 15 to 20, 2016 in Cannes, rolled out the red carpet for Japan country of honor and a rich line-up of stars.
MIPCOM 2016 saw this year a very high attendance. This edition, with Japan as guest country, has hosted numerous delegations from 108 countries. More than 400 exhibitors have invested the Palais des Festivals and the Old Port and welcomed 14,000 professionals. Among them, there were 3,400 buyers and 1,500 purchasing managers for digital platforms or SVOD who came to do their shopping in the largest digital library in the world.
Biology and science at MIPJunior
The MIPJunior, that was held for two days in the salons of the Grand Hyatt Cannes Hôtel Martinez, also broke attendance records with over 1,600 participants, including over 630 buyers (an increase of + 10%). 1,200 programs have been viewed on site and 260 development projects were presented to potential partners.
Some series episodes were presented to the participants in world première like Splash and Bubbles, an animated series that teaches children biology and the science of marine world through the many adventures of a little yellow fish and a dragon. France 3 presented Grizzy and the Lemmings, a big brown bear whose peace is constantly attacked by naughty little lemmings that blight his life.
The opening night of MIPJunior was also an opportunity for the production and distribution company Millimages to celebrate 25 years of creation for children with a beautiful birthday cake and a raffle that allowed three lucky winners to leave at the end evening, not by foot, but riding a nice bicycle.
Mata Hari and Mars at the Palais
As for MIPCOM 2016, a record number of previews were shown as part of the International Drama Screenings and World Premiere TV Screenings. The first episode of the series Mata Hari was marked at its presentation by the presence of the two heroes of the series, the actress Vahina Giocante and actor Christophe Lambert. They took part in a photocall organized on the terrace of the Hotel Majestic Barriere.
The Halcyon, The Same Sky, The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Let’s do the Time Warp Again and an episode of The Catch – Season 2 were also screened in world premiere.
An originality has appeared at MIPCOM 2016: for the first time, the Cannes public could access to the Grand Théâtre Lumière for the screening of the new documentary Mars broadcast on National Geographic and produced by Fox Networks Group Content Distribution and BBC Worldwide’s Planet Earth II. On the party side, MIPCOM 2016 celebrated with Marc Dorcel 10 years of charm of Dorcel TV at the nightclub Les Marches in the Palais des Festivals.
Japan, Country of Honour
Japan, country of honor at MIPCOM 2016, attracted more than 500 Japanese professionals from 104 companies. Shinzo Abe, the Japanese prime minister, addressed to the international television community a video message in which he expressed the hope that this exceptional program dedicated to his country would help promote the best of technology and television content from Japan.
Another highlight, the first keynote given by the CEO of Sony Corporation, Kazuo Hirai, dedicated to the latest Japanese technological prowess in HD, 4K, 8K or in virtual reality, as well as new today’s animation programs offered internationally by Japan.
Over the years, MIPCOM has become the largest TV market in the world for the buying and selling of television programs but also the rendezvous of many producers who come to Cannes to promote their hit series, along internationally recognized actresses and actors. These TV stars willingly expose themselves to the flashes of many photographers who immortalize them walking the legendary Red Carpet of the Grand Hyatt Cannes Hôtel Martinez or during numerous photo calls organized by MIPCOM. A great opportunity also for the television series fans to see their favorite stars appearing before them in the flesh.
