open gdf suez 2015On the eve of Roland Garros, Cagnes-sur-Mer hosted the Open GDF SUEZ and the best tennis players in the world for an always spectacular and fierce competition.

The third major French rendezvous of women’s international tennis on clay, the Open GDF SUEZ in Cagnes-sur-Mer was held from May 2 to 10, 2015 at the Parc des Sports Pierre Sauvaigo.

A coveted sports event

First women’s sports event in the Alpes-Maritimes, leader in its class, this tournament has become a key event in the international calendar to score some important points in the world ranking.

The planet’s best players

For 18 years, the Open GDF SUEZ in Cagnes-sur-Mer received the best players in the tennis world such as Maria Sharapova, Dementieva, the Williams sisters. Other champions shone in Cagnes such as Amélie Mauresmo, record holder of the number of titles in Paris, now retired, or Caroline Garcia, winner of the 2013 edition who has been steadily rising to reach the 25th place at ATP ranking and Timea Bacsinszky, finalist last year, who ranks at the 23rd place.

The matches

This year, in the first qualifying round, out of 10 competitors, 4 players were still competing for the second round, played on Sunday. Then on Monday, Sharon Fichman, the defending champion, Carina Witthoeft, seeded no 1, qualified for the second round. On Tuesday, only the tricolor Mathilde Johansson and Pauline Parmentier got their ticket for the second round.

On Wednesday, Carina Witthoeft continued to assume her status and qualified for the quarterfinals, like the defending champion, Sharon Fichman. The other two winners of the day were Kiki Bertens and Aliaksandra Sasnovich.
By late afternoon, the players turned into models for a day, and marched through the aisles of the Pierre Sauvaigo park, showcasing collections from Galeries Lafayette Cap 3000, to the spectators’ delight.

On Thursday, Pauline Parmentier was the winner of her semi-quarter final but, on the other hand, Mathilde Johansson was eliminated. Yulia Putintseva, 2012 winner, Daria Gavrilova and Tatjana Maria were the other qualified of the day.

A German final

Friday saw the French player Pauline Parmentier surrender. She failed to redo her 2011 performance, when she reached the final of the Open. Tatjana Maria, who won the French, was opposed to her compatriot Carina Witthoeft for the title on Sunday.
In the final played on Sunday, the German Carina Witthoeft overcame her compatriot Tatjana Maria and won the 18th edition of the Open GDF SUEZ. She succeeds the Canadian Sharon Fichman and became the first German to win the Open since Martina Muller in 2006.
