Organic School Meals in Nice

Organic meals once a month for Nice children

To reach the target of the Grenelle of the Environment of 20% bio meals in school canteens by 2012, Nice puts on a spurt. On July 4th, after a decision of the Deputy-Mayor of Nice, Mr Christian Estrosi, the city resumed in direct control the preparation of meals. Once a month 100 % organic meals are introduced to test the capacity to produce at first 3,500 meals a day for the summer recreation centers and later 22,000 meals during the year. Offering organic meals in not that simple as in France, less than 4% of the farmland produces organic vegetables. Thus, Nice appealed to local producers to satisfy its needs and find delicious vegetables and fruits, like tomatoes, whose skin is thin and can’t stand a long travel but have a since long forgotten taste. Eating quality and nutrient content of these products are involved in the children nutritive education to teach them true values of a delicious and healthy cuisine and divert them food causing obesity. A cause to care about for Mr Christian Estrosi who expressed on July 25, his concerns for the quality of the products given to children and the lowest as possible cost for canteen meals, during the test-meal offered to children from the recreation center "Fuon Cauda".
