Pelota in Cannes
High speed pelota just steps from the Croisette
One of Cannes features is a wall on which is practiced the Basque Pelota. The Cannes Pelota Club is one of the best clubs in France and regularly wins fame in National Challenges. The Cannes Pelota Club celebrated half a century in 2007 and two specialties of the Basque pelota are practiced throughout the year: the Grand Chistera and the gum paleta. Michel Ughetto, from Cannes, brought the Basque ball sport in the sport history of the city in 1957. "After a stay in the Basque Country, recalls Jean-Claude Berthelot, the current club President, he brought in his luggage chisteras (long leather gloves prolonged with a wicker basket) to try out a new ball game..." In tribute to this precursor, the wall of Cannes, built in 1959, is named after him. A school of Grand Chistera and "paleta" greets young pelotaris who want to learn the sport. From late June to early September, just steps from the Croisette, on a magnificent wall (Fronton Michel Ughetto) at the season, the Cannes team faces at Grand Chistera the most prestigious teams of the best national club. The show surprises by the elegance of the game and players, the power of the shots and need of vista due to the speed of the ball.
Friday, August 12 9:00 PM - Master of Great Chistera with international players from Miami and Orlando. On this occasion, people can savor an Aioli while watching the match.
