Independence Day in Cannes

 

Independence Day Ceremony at Liberator Monument


A symbolic gesture celebrating the American National Independence day as well as paying tribute to the crew of the US. Liberator B-24 aircraft which crashed in May of 1944, was held at the site of the crash on the “Croix des Gardes, on the 4th of July. The annual event  organized by the City of Cannes, brought together many attentive spectators who appreciated the discourse given by Rear Admiral James Foggo, Deputy Commander of the US. 6th Fleet, who spoke elegantly about the Franco American Friendship, which dates back to 1776 and the various Naval current exercises between the US. France, Britain and even Russia. The Admiral made a special visit to be at this ceremony, as well as the Commanding Officer Eric Conzen and officer and sailors of the USS Whidbey Island. Deputy Mayor Monsieur Bernard Brochand also spoke about the long lasting friendship between France and the USA.

Present as well were many members of the U.S. Navy League including National U.S. Navy League President Daniel Branch, who responded to the invitation of Cornelis Van Vliet, President of the U.S Navy League based in Cannes since 1987,  Van Vliet is stepping up initiatives to increase the membership and activities and to promote French American relations.
