Rebirth of Montfleury, an iconic sports complex
The City of Cannes has ratified the long-awaited revival of a landmark site in Cannes: the Montfleury Sports Complex. At the foot of the Californie hill, where homes and mansions nestle in lush gardens, the many amenities new space, seamlessly integrated into a park, will be a strong element of attractiveness and quality of life for all Cannes inhabitants. Project director David Lisnard, first Deputy, described it as "both iconic and simple, complete and economical, ambitious and reasonable, in line with history, thus with the identity of the neighborhood and Cannes". Entered in its operational phase, the concept aims, indeed, to combine sports, leisure and relaxation, thanks to the laying-out of a garden, a municipal hall, tennis courts and a swimming pool. The public garden, a haven of greenery, treated in bamboo plantation to remind bamboos already on the site and in the district of Californie, will offer quiet areas, a pool, a snack bar, children's games. Pedestrians wishing to reach the city center from the Californie, will find an easy and pleasant path, leading from Avenue Beauséjour to the Rue de Turckheim. The Municipal Room, accessible from the Avenue Beauséjour, will allow many uses and will benefit from a view overlooking the whole site, in particular the seven tennis courts of which, three made out of clay. The pool will include a removable-roof swimming pool (five 25m lanes), an activity pool (100 m2) and a wading pool. Outside, the beaches will be extended by a lawn, allowing swimmers to bathe in the sun. Finally, parking slots will be created to service the new equipment. These locations will be used at night for residential parking. The program was finalized and the Municipality has decided to launch the works required to build the new Montfleury complex for an estimated € 11.5 million upon which should be added other investments for furniture, sports and technical equipment. The delivery of the entire project is scheduled for late 2013.
