Rallye du Soleil
Rallye du Soleil
Vintage racing cars on the road to the sun
During the weekend of November 12 and 13 the Rallye du Soleil took place in the hinterland of Cannes. Many pilots had said this for the tenth anniversary of this historic rally that began Saturday in Cannes and ended Sunday evening in Cannes la Bocca where the awards ceremony took place in the Renault Spaces. 130 vehicles were at the start, some having over 50 years. Under the eye of curious spectators, the vintage cars were revving their engines ready to do battle throughout the race. There was suspense in three categories: HRV (historic racing vehicle) VRHS (regular) and "classic".
In the main event (HRV) Jacques Lions, who won last year, has done it again. Driving a Ford Escort MK2 and aided by his co-driver Nicolas Klinger, he left nine Porsche 911 Lions ahead of the finish line. A victory that emerged Saturday night after the abandonment of two favorites, André Caruso and Thomas Tiéran. On the arrival, the new winner paid tribute to the level of registered drivers. In VHRS the win goes to Thierry Gillet and Jean François Berry (Alfa Romeo GT), while Alain Armandoni, Yannick Cukrowsky and Volkswagen Golf GTI dominated the classic. The president of the ASA Cannes, Jean Francois Vergote, welcomed the smooth running and success of this tenth edition, which was for him a very good year given the level of the participants. A challenge that will be hard to take on next year, that organizers wish even better.
