The CUM renovated & illuminated

The Mediterranean University Center renovation

In honor of the delivery of the work of renovation and lighting, the Centre Universitaire Mediterranean hosted in its amphitheater on January 2, 2012, the deputy mayor Christian Estrosi, President of Nice Côte d'Azur, M. Micel Turkish logistics manager and coordinator of the operation, André Michel, director of municipal buildings and Daugreilh Martine, director of the CUM.

For this occasion, Mayor Christian Estrosi has signified to a large audience the outcome of this project which allowed him to follow Jean Medecin's footsteps who projected Nice into modernity, and then that it has given a new life to this magnificent building by making it enter into the 21st century, particularly in terms of technology and accessibility, without losing its soul and identity.

Indeed, the building housing the CUM, facing the sea on the Promenade des Anglais, is a place of memory and prestige that was bequeathed in 1878 to the city of Nice. The CUM was established in 1933 and until 1965 was a cultural and intellectual center whose director was Paul Valery. He then served in the installation of the new University of Nice, before returning to become today an exchange, research and expression center, a house dedicated to the worship of the spirit of scientific research institute, meeting of the leading minds in the world, a unique institution that participates in both of the University, the College de France and institutions of international order, conferences, concerts, seminars, round tables, entertainment for children and adolescents.

In order to maintain the splendor of the building, Christian Estrosi decided to make inside and outdoor works. After repairing the dome and mural frescoes, the walls and ceilings of the hemicycle were also painted, the flooring has been changed, the large auditorium seats covered with purple, the ceiling found again its copper chandeliers from the thirties.

Also as part of the "Intelligent City", the CUM is provided with equipment for retransmission of conferences or live events on the Internet and worldwide distribution. We could also admire the brilliance of the revived colors, the Sardinian red, of this a new showcase of CUM from the Promenade des Anglais, at a cost of 900,000 euros.

Concluding his speech, Christian Estrosi emphasized that today, armed with a rich program, a clear strategy, a new awareness now more accessible to all, the CUM is called to play a new key role in what Jean Medecin called "a policy of the mind."
