Romy Schneider Exhibition in Cannes
Romy Schneider Exhibition in Cannes
Everlasting Romy: the inner light of an eternal myth
The Romy Schneider exhibition opened at the Palais des Festivals of Cannes in the presence of Sarah Biasini, daughter of the great actress and ambassador for the exhibition. At the opening, David Lisnard, First Deputy Mayor of Cannes thanked Tristan Duval, producer of the Romy Schneider exhibition for bringing "the beautiful and the dream, the beauty of Romy Schneider and the quality of photos. Tristan Duval went further, saying how "Romy Schneider was an artist witness of an era, and how much she still was present in our lives! The Palais des Festivals, temple of Cinema, is the perfect setting for this immersive journey through time, from Sissi through films by Claude Sautet to "La Passante du Sans Souci." Isabelle Gainche, Palais des Festivals Marketing Director, explained that this exhibition was part of the "Cannes is Yours" approach, to offer high quality entertainment to tourists and cannois. Curator Jean-Pierre Lavoignat related how he unraveled trails to find objects, like he did with Alain Delon who eventually lent the gown the actress wore in a play and many framed pictures from the time they were in love. Sarah Biasini expressed how proud she was to participate in the exhibition: "This is the best gift I could give her! "she said. "Apart from seeing her films, this is the highest tribute." Sarah was moved because the exhibition marks the thirtieth anniversary of her mother's death. "Even though I have known little of her, because I only was four and a half when she passed on, I know her better than anyone because she made me and I have her in here!" she said, touching her bosom.
On 800 sq. m, photos, film clips, posters, dresses, unpublished letters and rare objects trace the actress' career, from the romantic roles of "Sissi Empress", through roles more sensual as "La Piscine" or tormented as "Le Vieux Fusil", with, as underlying thread, the destiny of a passionate woman who had several love stories and divorced when not yet a common feature of our society. A journey through time that revives the beauty and talent of the actress who, though Austrian, will become the epitome of French Woman and scooped the first-ever César right under Catherine Deneuve and Isabelle Adjani's noses for her role in "L'important C'Est d'Aimer" (Love is The Important Thing). "An exhibition to highlight the inner light she gave off as a woman and in her roles", curator Jean-Pierre Lavoignat said. Romy Schneider's light enchant us but she keeps her mystery for herself. She used to say: "Je ne sais rien faire dans la vie, mais tout au cinéma!"
