MTU High-Tech Marine Engines

MTU at the forefront of technology and ecology

MTU Friedrichshafen is nowadays the main company in Tognum AG group that combines, as a strategic holding, some of the most important diesel and gas engines plants worldwide, as well as complete systems of generators. In Tognum can be found well-known brands: MTU, Detroit Diesel, Mercedes-Benz industrial engines, MTU Onsite Energy and L'Orange. Tognum presents its high-tech marine engine Series 2000. MTU also showcases its command control system and offers maintenance solutions for large yachts. The Series 2000 M94 marine engine boasts performance among the highest in its category and a further optimized weight/power ratio. A power increase of up to 8% compared to its predecessor. Available in versions 8, 10, 12 and 16 cylinders, the engine covers the power range from 930 to 1,940 kilowatts at a speed of 2450 rev/min. In order to optimize fuel consumption at a steady state and generate a higher boost at low speeds, the efficiency of turbochargers has been improved, key element to reducing the acceleration time of ships at sea. Moreover, the range meets all international emission standards applicable to marine engines and provides in standard the SOLAS (Safety of Life At Sea) certificate. To ensure that the engine temperature never exceeds 220° C, the M94 also incorporates a diesel circuit with double and triple walls, as well as water-cooled turbochargers and exhaust manifolds. The M94 engine is also an exceptionally quiet motor disseminating very low sound pressure levels at idle or low speed. MTU also exposes "Blueline", a command and control system of Series 2000 and 4000 propulsions. Blueline is appropriate for different propulsion systems such as fixed-pitch propellers (FPP) or hydrojets. It is not only due to its engine but also to his service that MTU is a partner customers can count on. The service includes MTU ValueCare a longer warranty (EPC: Extended Coverage Propulsion), which allows customers to cover themselves financially against unforeseen repairs. Other service offerings include custom maintenance contracts, remote research, and providing fast and secure MTU original parts. The firm was established in 1909 by Mr. Maybach, provider for Zeppelin and Daimler, and celebrated its centenary in 2009. MTU headquarters are located on Lake Constance in Germany shared with Austria and Switzerland, country which has very strict laws in ecology and environment. The group employs 9500 employees and produces a € 3 billion annual turnover. The MTU concern is the nitrogen oxide (NOx), which are highly polluting. A search of 15 years has enabled MTU to be innovative in the field, with the optimization of combustion principle, which reduces pollution as well as new materials and refined machining processes. MTU gets a point of honor to be a standard ahead of the competition and international law level. MTU is the supplier of many premium brands and has a 60% share of the world market and fits out, among others, motor boats from 20 to 35 meters. The time between major overhaul of an engine is in many times 9,000 hours and for example, a yachtsman navigates for fun 100 hours and 500 hours if he occasionally rents his boat to companies charters. MTU introduces the latest generation of 4000 Series

The latest 4000M53/M63 engines type are available with 8V, 12V and 16V cylinders variants and cover a power range between 746 and 2,240 kilowatts. Due to their low fuel consumption, they are predestined for use in travel yachts, leading to a maximum range of sailing for the yacht. This engine has a long stroke and high torque and excellent acceleration behavior, even at low load. It is characterized by high availability and reliability as well as maintenance intervals extended to 33,000 hours, which is very important, especially for displacement hull yachts. The engines have also an excellent acoustic behavior that allows a high level of comfort on board.
