Qatar Pavilion attracts major attention

Inside the two-storey first-ever Qatar Pavilion at MIPIM, Qatar has showcase on the Croisette 50 real estate projects currently under development, with a total value of over US$40 billion. Hosted by Msheireb Properties, Qatari Diar and Lusail Real Estate Development Company – three of the Middle East’s leading developers – the pavilion was reflecting the Gulf state’s pioneering work in progressive urban planning, construction, sustainable development and preservation of urban identity. The pavilion also has been the venue for the inaugural Qatar Urban Forum, a two-day conference that has engaged top international experts in discussions on the most pressing issues concerning sustainable urban development.

The first country from the Middle East and North Africa to host a national exhibition at MIPIM, Qatar has joined an elite group comprising London, Paris and Germany as the only nations to have hosted such a pavilion at MIPIM. The three hosts are among the largest in the region, with Qatari Diar currently planning or developing 49 projects in 29 countries. The companies’ combined portfolio amounts to a total value of over US$40 billion.

Building on the tremendous local and international experience that these three companies have acquired in urban development, the Qatar Urban Forum has encouraged fruitful dialogue among experts, business leaders and government officials directly engaged in progressive approaches to planning, architecture, design and development within cities around the world. Invited speakers include the British architect Lord Rogers, famous for modernist-style work such as the Pompidou Centre in Paris and who has devoted much of his later career to wider issues surrounding architecture, urbanism, sustainability and the ways that cities are used; Angela Brady, President of RIBA; Ken Yeang, best known for advancing green design; and the renowned Italian architect Massimiliano Fuksas.

Msheireb Properties has showcased for the second time at MIPIM its US$5.5 billion Msheireb Downtown Doha, the world’s first urban regeneration project. Msheireb intends to restore the historic heart of Qatar's capital identity in order to encourage the people to return downtown. The project Msheireb aims to meeting the legacy and Qatari traditional aesthetics and modern technology. Msheireb encompass the values and aesthetic concepts inspired by traditional architecture of Qatar that are proportion, simplicity, space, light, ornament, overlay and climate adaptation, while using cutting-edge environmental technologies.

Qatari Diar has displayed a selection of its projects in the United Kingdom, Tajikistan, Sudan and Qatar, including the company’s largest undertaking in Europe in terms of value - the Chelsea Barracks. Lusail Real Estate Development Company, a subsidiary of Qatari Diar, presented its 38km2 Lusail City, the largest single development to be undertaken in the State of Qatar and one that, upon completion, will provide homes to nearly a quarter of a million residents.
