Traveling in a  brand new world


The world’s first duty free shop was opened at Shannon Airport in Ireland in 1947 to serve trans-Atlantic airline passengers traveling between North America and Europe while they were in transit. The Irish argued that, having passed passport control, the passenger had left the country and therefore the duties & taxes of that country were not applicable. Since this ancestor of duty-free shops, the number of traveling people has exploded and the trade is now a flourishing business. In 2010 global duty free and travel retail sales totaled US$ 39 billion - up 13% on the previous year.

Founded in 1984, Tax Free World Association is the world's largest non-profit making duty-free and travel retail association. Its mission is to enable and empower the duty free and travel retail industry by providing the opportunities and the tools for brand and market growth.  With a membership of over 400 of the world’s best known and most prestigious brand-owners, TFWA is well-placed to represent and support this thriving industry. TFWA World Exhibition is the global exhibition and conference event for the industry, attracting some 450 exhibiting companies and over 5000 visitors every year in Cannes Palais des Festivals et des Congrès. TFWA President, Erik Juul-Mortensen provided a very positive assessment of the 2011 Tax Free edition: a turnover increase of 9%, over 40 new exhibitors and 6 to 7% renewal on an exhibition area of over 20,000 square meters. The most significant areas of growth were in delegations from Asia at +15% and Europe +11% with +13% from Africa, +4% from the Americas and a drop of -6% from the Middle East and -12% from Oceania.
