Bronze d’Airain Art Foundry 25th Anniversary

For the 25 years of the art foundry “Le Bronze d’Airain”, its creator Marc Massa presented the work of several contemporary artists such as Bria Bari, Steph Cop, Nicolas Lavarenne, Serge Van de Put… in partnership with FG Fine Art gallery.

After a career of ironworker and founder, Marc Massa opened his own foundry in 1988 in Tourettes-sur-Loup, in order to innovate and develop the trade both at technical and creative level. He also proposes his own creations and collections.

Expertise in foundry technology

The Bronze d’Airain foundry is an expert in foundry technology, mainly the lost wax technique. Marc Massa made his own furnaces (melting and cooking of 75 kW) and developed a pantograph that allows him to reproduce sculptures in large size. He developed a system of fumes treatment and a technique of casting by aspiration. This process, commonly used by jewelers and prosthetists for casting small pieces, has been adapted to foundry production of large pieces. This technique provides a very good quality and an excellent homogeneity of bronze.
The company controls all manufacturing steps and offers both its creative services of founder, moulder, engraver, patina. The Bronze d’Airain foundry distinguishes itself through the development of its own equipment and techniques, resulting in a unique know-how in particular in achieving monumental pieces.

1st Prize of the Dynamique Artisanale

The “shopwindow” of the workshop consists of an exhibition gallery for models made for sculptors and some creations of the workshop. It preserves and archives all cast works molds, and can therefore reproduce a bronze at the sculptor’s request.
Bronze d’Airain foundry and Marc Massa achieved for the mayor of Fréjus a text in bronze in tribute to General de Gaulle, a bronze cup for the final of Des Chiffres et des Lettres TV show, in Monaco a bronze bust of Léo Ferré, a collection of three bronze columns for the Ministry of Culture, a “Flames” monument dedicated to the martyrs of the resistance in Gattières .
The foundry received the 1st Prize of the Dynamique Artisanale 1998 by Banque Populaire Côte d’ Azur, the 1st Prize of the Craftsman of the new Millennium in 2001by the Chamber of Trade of the Maritime Alps, and the EPV label in 2009. Excellence of French know-how, the label Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant (Living Heritage Company) is a trademark of the Ministry of Economy, Finance and Industry, put in place to reward French companies with craft skills and manufacturing excellence.

On exhibition were Nicolas Lavarenne, Bertrand Pigeon, Steph. Cop, Serge Van de Put, Marc Massa, Romeda, Marion Burklé, Pilli, Bria Bari, George…

Many prestigious artists

After the imposing gate of the citadel, our steps lead us naturally into the Volti courtyard where our gaze is intercepted by Nicolas Lavarenne’s airborne sculpture; then turning the head, we are intrigued by the sculptures of animals made out of pneumatic of Belgian Serge Van de Put. Facetious garden gnomes, much funnier than their lawn version; in the aisles are sculptures and paintings that come together like the traveling artist Emmanuel Michel’s ones, friendly and warm “orange painter” Ismael Cosma or color which takes geometric shapes with Davis Ferreira.

Old stones and contemporary Art

A lot of creation in this magical place where old stones confront to contemporary art. The original materials, bright colors come together in this prestigious place where you can stroll in a pleasant and relaxed atmosphere. On the occasion of the Cocteau Year, the visitors of Franchement Art exhibition have also discovered the works of young artists and they had the opportunity to attend screenings of films “The Testament of Orpheus” and ” The Eternal Return” in the auditorium of the Citadel.

Lucio Oliveri Exhibition at Mougins Espace Culturel

A must-see exhibition this summer in Mougins, that of artist painter and sculptor Lucio Oliveri, whose works with themes women, love, maternity, child, tenderness, complicity hand in hand, are a constant and poetic research on consciousness and relationship between human beings.

Lucio Oliveri’s artistic vocation was trigged in 1954, at the age of nineteen, when his father died and he decided to save his portrait in clay. In the seventies, to complete his own self-taught training, he followed during seven years sculpture course at Milan Artistic Centre. After a classical figurative start, Lucio Oliveri identifies himself as a figurative character oriented towards the expression of soul feelings, of human behavior, through the synthesis and the essence of human illustration with, as a mentor, Professor Paolo Levi, artistic director of Giorgio Mondadori Editions.
Lucio Oliveri then feels the need to find an expressive and recognizable art, which is why, in his artistic approach, you can pick his gift to capture the feeling of a meticulous moods investigator. He therefore identifies himself in a customized figuration through the representation and analysis of the essence of the human figure.
From the beginning of his career, he has shed light on his creative qualities to combine form and content with the wisdom and vision of a complete structure. Although starting from a primarily classical background, he was also able to develop a personal vision of the sculptural form in which he expresses through a high sensitivity and manual dexterity, playing on feelings and avoiding thedecorative, he gives priority to the figural content of his creation.
All this allows him to create a sculpture with a clear and recognizable signature code that responds to the importance and urgency of his plastic forms. Lucio Oliveri’s workd, inspired by twentieth century sculptors, are to be read in two ways: first, the fragmentation of the various elements of the structure of the human body, which acts as an expressive accent, then the poetic invention giving the viewer an underlying current of non-said words. Extremely versatile, his art has the same ease on chalk, on terracotta and bronze. Lucio Oliveri lives and works in Milan, where he is a member of the Cultural Arts Center. He has participated in several art exhibitions in Italy and abroad, receiving on these occasions numerous awards and distinctions.

Folon Lands at Villa Domergue in Cannes

Folon, The Unprecedented Journey is the summer exhibition the city Cannes offers in tribute to the great artist Jean-Michel Folon, in the exceptional setting of Villa Domergue. On July 13, 2013, at the opening of the luxurious house built by famous painter Jean-Gabriel Domergue in 1934 (Folon’s year of birth), the first visitors have discovered 25 sculptures of the multi-field artist.

The mysterious gardens of this magical place, located Avenue Fiesole, allowed many visitors to enjoy a unique part of the Belgian artist’s work. By recreating in the gardens a real dialogue between the artist, the viewer and the monumental sculptures that are deployed, the exhibition invites to dream. To fly with the bronze works of The Man Looking at The Stars or The Takeoff (highlight of the exhibition), or to travel with the Start or The Suitcase.
As a souvenir of Folon, most of us have the image of a man with a delighted smile, with a wise man face, radiant and full of humanity. This image is reflecting in his sculptural and poetic work, full of imagination, represented by compositions of characters or animals with hybrid forms whose autonomy liberates thought.
In the stillness of a moment, the attitude surrounded in space is similar to the time set on the lonely takeoff of a bird. Like sentinels quiet in their bodies, the characters with transfigured forms immortalize in the cross of silence, at the center of an area that brings towards meditation. The ideas and themes coming from this world lying beyond the real denote an ironic spirit that humorously refers men to their contradictions.
Everyone has indeed remembered the Antenne 2 closing titles created by Folon in 1975. Wearing hat and a blue jacket, characters with soles of wind were evolving like birds among the stars, towards sunset. Remained famous, this generic inviting the viewers to join the world of dreams was summoning themes and motifs dear to the artist: the man and his place in nature, freedom, travel. “What have we done else that give life to our childhood dreams?” he wondered about the process of artists.
Few people remember that he was also one of the first to express in his work the great loneliness of man in the city. Lonely men, often small but incredibly present, actors and spectators at the same time who never seem prisoners of city walls, giant hoardings they themselves erected. There is always at Folon an aspiration to freedom and reason for hope. Jean-Michel Folon died in 2005 in Monaco
The exhibition was inaugurated in the presence of Mr. Frederic Balester, Director of La Malmaison Art Centre, Mr. Eric Harson, Cannes Culture Deputy and Guy and Linda Peters, gallerists. The 25 sculptures by Folon exposed at Villa Domergue are part of Guy and Linda Peters’ personal collection.
The Malmaison Art Centre is offering a circuit in contemporary art. A joint ticket allows access to two summer exhibitions: Picasso’s Nude In Liberty at Malmaison Art Center and Folon, the Unprecedented Journey at Villa Domergue.

Exhibition until September 29, 2013

Every day from 11 am to 07 pm.

Carmen Bewitches Voix En Vigne Lyric Festival at Château Roubine

The Voix en Vigne Lyric Festival at prestigious Château Roubine was honoring the element Fire on July 11: the fire of love resonated with strength and grace under the summer starred sky of Provence. Carmen, the Rebel Bird sang its song of life, its passionate impetus of senses, its cry for freedom before facing its destiny.

Carmen, created by George Bizet in Paris in 1875, is one of the most performed opera in the world. From “Carmen”, a short story by Prosper Mérimée, it tells the tragic story of a free and independant woman with spellbinding beauty, sulfurours in some ways, who intents to take the man she loves and leave him once love is gone. But alas, in early 19th century Seville, she has still to deal with men’s machism and obstinate, blind passion. Carmen is a bohemian working as a cigar-maker in a manufacture facing the Alcala dragons military barracks. During the prelude, Carmen tells what she thinks of love in an utmost famous song: “L’amour est un oiseau rebelle” (Love is a rebel bird): “Love is a Bohemia child, it has never ever known any law. If you do not love me, I love you and if I love you, you best beware!” When singing her song, Carmen spots brigadier Don José, approaches him, and after a light chat, she grabs off a flower from her bodice and throw it at the young man. Thus, she shows him he’d been chosen. Don José picks up the flower, smells it, whithout realizing he’s already under her spell.
Micaela arrives, tells Don José she comes on behalf of her mother, and gives him a letter in which her mother praises the young women qualities and advises him to marry her!… because “…there are no wiser or kinder woman.” Then, during a fight she provoked, Carmen injures a worker with her knife and is arrested, tied, and promised prison. Don José is put in charge to led her to it. On the way, Carmen sings him the “Seguidilla”, implying “my heart is as free as air …who wants to love me, I’ll love..” It does not take long for Don José to untie the rope and let his prisoner escape, singing overjoyed: ” Free, I’m free!” Alas, the gentle soldier goes in prison at her place.
Later in the Lillas Pastia’s tavern comes the bullfighter Escamillo, crowned with glory by his success in the arena and he sings “Toreador, on guard! Toreador! Do think that while fighting a black eye is watching you and love is waiting for you!” Finally, Don José finds Carmen when released from prison. He is always carrying with him the flower she gave him, faded now, but proving that he was only thinking about her. Carmen asked him then, to prove his love, to follow her up in the mountain and join the smugglers. Don José, braving shame and stigma of desertion eventually gives in.
Some time later, Carmen finds that Don José is not done for the trade of smuggler and at the same time she is feeling his love falter. Don José realizes it and also think of his aging mother. Carmen only sees bad omens in the cards. Don José shoots a stranger lurking around the camp, but misses him. This stranger is Escamillo come to obtain Carmen’s favors, and the two men confront each other. Carmen intervenes and prevents Don José of stabbing Escamillo. When he left, Don José warns Carmen not to hurt him any longer. Micaela arrives, entering the camp singing “I’m doing the brave at heart, but I die of fright.” She comes for Don José, because his mother is dying. Carmen encourages Don José to go, and so does he, promising to see her again.
In the last act, Escamillo arrives in the arena of Seville, accompanied by Carmen. But Don José is there and starts to beg Carmen and proclaims his love for her. Carmen says she no longer loves him, but Don José insists: “… but I, I still love you!” To end Don José’s begging, Carmen removes and throws the ring he had given her. Don José, driven mad by this gesture, stabbed her to death.
Carmen opera at Voix en Vigne was brillantly interpreted by very high-level performers: Carmen was played by soprano Murielle Tomao, who performs on major lyric stages; soprano Fleur Catalano was Micaela, she also performs on opera stages in France and abroad; Don José was interpreted by tenor Norbert Xeri, who perfomes in key opera roles and tenor Norbert Dole, who sings under the greatest conductors, was Escamillo. They were accompanied by the Giocoso Orchestra, under the direction of Pierre Iodice, who conducts the Marseille Opera Choirs. At the beginning, the Giocoso Orchestra performed Rossini’s Barbier de Séville opening and Mozart’s Opening of The Marriage of Figaro.
After thanking the artists and the orchestra for the quality of their performance, Château Roubine owner Valérie Rouselle offered the audience a fireworks.

The Ecole Superieure de Danse de Cannes Rosella Hightower released many “birds” who have become soloists and star dancers in prestigious ballet worldwide. Some returned to the nest to dance at the Nuits des Etoiles.

Summer Art Exhibition at Château Sainte Roseline

The prestigious Château Sainte Roseline vineyard is one of the richest historical sites in Provence with the presence of the Sainte Roseline chapel in the heart of the château. Besides producing an outstanding and constantly awarded Cru Classé Côtes de Provence wines, Château Sainte Roseline’s owner Aurélie Bertin organizes every summer, since 1998, a world-class cultural program to propose an exhibition of internationally-known artists Robert Courtright and Bruno Romeda.

This summer, she offers her guests and visitors of the Château an exhibition from July 5 to September 30, 2013, of works by Italian sculptor Bruno Romeda (sculptures) and American painter Robert Courtright (collages, masks) in collaboration with the Galerie Jean-Jacques Dutko.

Bruno Romeda, Italian artist born in 1933, evokes the influence of César’s welded metal parts, as well as the Minimalist American sculpture, from Carl André to Donald Judd, that he discovered in New York in the 70s. Minimal lines and figures of his sculptures (circle, triangle, square, perspectives…) are found in the clean lines of his furniture in bronze. “The object creates the space,” Bruno Romeda says.
Settled in France in 1952, the American painter born in 1926 Robert Courtright inspired from the 1970s from the imagination of the Nice Carnival to create artistic masks. Mediterranean landscapes and Italian Quattrocento made him develop an abstract art made of collages using monochrome paper, cotton, marble paste and acrylic. Robert Courtright died last year.

In this exhibition, both artists are complementary: Courtright joins sculpture in that his painting collages present some matter when Romeda presents two-dimension openings lines through his scultures. Both work of Art demand viewers to turn around them and open their  own imaginary world, this opening of minds being provoked by the presence of the artist’s work. Closely looking at Courtright’s colored collage let appear some difference on the surface, evolving with the light when one looks at it after different angles.Romeda’s talent is to change the space with his sculptures: they subtly change the area in which his works of art stand, especially if they are set after an elaborate staging to expand the perspectives. His circles, squares, triangles thus become doors requesting our imagination to play with the works of art and discover how three dimensional effects change when turning around them. But Romeda’s sculpture are not only objects to walk around. They let the energy circulate between the full and the empty, what Lao Tseu expressed very well in his The fullness of Emptiness poems: “The nothing makes the unity”.

Art is everywhere in Château Sainre Roseline and in its park, dotted with works by Folon, Jim Dine, César, Arman, Jan Desmarest, Bernar Venet, William Sweetlove … who for the most part already exhibited here. The Château chapel, built in the twelfth century, contains a mosaic by Marc Chagall, Giacometti bronzes and light enters through stained-glass windows by Jean Bazaine and Ubac. The Château Sainte Roseline proposes as well a rich program of cultural events during the summer including many concerts.

Exhibition until September 30th, on free acces.

Mieke De Vries Exhibition at Château Roubine

In the heart of the Var Provence, between Lorgues and Draguignan, Château Roubine, whose Côtes de Provence wines are honored with the title of Cru Classé since 1953, is one of the oldest vineyards in France. For its summer exhibition, Château Roubine presents Mieke De Viers, Dutch artist painter Provencal by adoption.

The Templar Knights , former owner of Château Roubine, gave it to the Order of St. John of Jerusalem in 1307. Its strategic position on the Roman road called “Giulia” and its particular beauty made it an absolute must. The Templar shield traces the history of the estate: the Dragon, animal symbol of Draguignan, the Lion, animal symbol of Lorgues, protected by the rays of the sun of Provence.
Its owner, Valerie Rousselle, knows how to use with respect the best of nature to produce wines of exceptional quality whose reputation has already been around the world. The estate covers 130 hectares, including 72 hectares of vineyard which has a natural drainage – hence the origin of the name “Roubine”, meaning “stream” in Provencal. The production excels by an optimal combination between technology and the correct application of sustainable agriculture.
Valerie Rousselle continues to mix culture and viticulture by offering a rich cultural program, such as Voix en Vigne Lyric Festival (9 and 11 July) and offers all year round painting exhibitions to her customers as part of the program Art and Wine.
The summer exhibition is enhancing Provence through the works of Dutch painter artist Mieke De Vries, showcasing an exhibition mixing fresh and mouth-watering fishes with landscapes of colorful Provencal villages, nestled in the countryside greenery. The exhibition evokes a holiday in Provence with its range of perfumes, gastronomy, wines and the characteristic deep colors of the region under the golden light of the sun.
Born in Amsterdam, Mieke De Vries lives and works in Flayosc, a small Provencal village of Dracénie. From 14 to 20 years of age, she took private drawing lessons with Rinus Duin, a famous Dutch painter. She studied painting and free graphic art at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, the most important training academy on painting in Holland. After completing her academic degree, she received additional training as drawings and textile application professor. Apart from her artistic career, Mieke De Vries teaches drawing at 16-21 years old students and provides individual drawing tuition in her workshop.
Mieke De Vries has exhibited in Amsterdam, The Hague, Stompwijk, Abcoude, Leiden and in many cities of Provence such as Les Arcs, Lorgues, Flayosc, Theoule sur Mer, St Antonin du Var and St. Tropez.

Cannes Photos Awards Honors The Sea

The Cannes Photos Awards photo contest pays tribute to the sea and ports, the points of contact of the marine world with the ground. For nearly 10,000 years, people has been moving on waters: from the hollowed out tree-trunks of the Neolithic to modern supertankers, Ports have always had an important role in our civilization.

Before the recent development of the aircraft, the Port was at the heart of all trade between the men; by shaping many pages of history, ports and men continue to fascinate. That is why this third edition of Cannes Photos Awards photo contest, organized by the Port of Cannes and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Nice Côte d’Azur, for amateurs and professionals, is aiming to reveal genuine talents and encourage vocations. This year’s theme was the Marine Achitecture.
The competition closed on 28 June, 2013, by the awards ceremony on the terrace on the 7th floor of the Radisson Blu in Cannes. This fourth edition was chaired by Jacques Rougerie, renowned French architect, helped by Franck Dosne, Director of the Port of Cannes, Jérôme Kelagopian, professional photographer, Christian Sinicropi, starred chef of the Palme d’Or, Bernard Naccache, Professional – Teacher at the ESRA. The Jury had the difficult task to select the best pictures from the quality submitted photographs. Obviously, French coastal residents were advantaged, but the others were all the more deserving. With many partners who invest each year in operation, the winners were rewarded with prestigious prizes such as stays and nights in luxury hotels, first flight by helicopter or first dive, photos workshops with professionnels.
This contest also has a big advantage by giving the winners the opportunity to see their best shots displayed among major names for two months on the esplanade Pantiero of the Port of Cannes, a place of passage by excellence for lovers of the sea, next to the Palais des Festivals.

The Cannes Photo Awards is a free competition and open to the public, through four categories:

Raph Gatti at Sapone Gallery in Nice

The Galerie Sapone, located in the heart of the city of Nice, presents a photo exhibition by Raph Gatti, photographer of AFP. It was inaugurated by Christian Estrosi, Deputy Mayor of Nice and President of Nice Côte d’Azur Metropole, his wife and many personalities.

Friend of Kessel, Chagall and many personalities he has photographed, it is manily his friendship and even his complicity with Picasso taht we find in these intimate pictures taken with the great artist. At this exhibition, you can find pictures of Picasso, the painter of Guernica with his deep and inquisitive look, in interior dress, casual, confidently smiling, fully engaged to his friend, without false modesty and privacy.
The discreet talented photographer liked to penetrate the depths of the soul of personalities he encountered and photographed by friendship and pure fun. You can see a completely different character, that of Jean Cocteau and his both childish and fragile smile, looking to seduce the one that looks at him by slightly posed postures. As Picasso, it is at home that he let his true self see the more easily, as in the photo taken at the Villa Santo Sospir in St Jean-Cap-Ferrat, with his close friends. We can also discover Jean Cocteau at work, in front of the magnificent work he has done with Raymond Moretti, The Age of Aquarius or when shooting a film such as “The Testament of Orpheus”.
It is a journey through friendship that this beautiful exhibition offers, some seldom moments set for ever on paper, which speaks of the friendship between Raph Gatti and artists Pablo Picasso and Jean Cocteau, but also the Raph Gatti friendship with Sapone.
The Galerie Sapone, created 37 years ago, is in connection with the best Italian, European, American galleries and museums. It has become an international reference in the heart of unique exhibits. It is located in the heart of the city of Nice, close to the famous Promenade des Anglais, in a neighborhood that has many art galleries. Many works (paintings, sculptures, photographs) of artists from diverse backgrounds are exposed throughout the year.

Exhibition until July 20, 2013

Nice Opera Hosts Russian Literary And Musical Evening in Tribute to Romanov

On the occasion of the 400th anniversary of the Romanov dynasty, the Centre Universitaire Méditerranéen (Mediterranean University Center) of Nice has organized a literary and musical event reflecting the unique historical and unbreakable bonds of friendship between Nice and Russia. This evening, bringing together diplomat and writer Vladimir Fédorovski and internationally renowned pianist Mikhail Rudya was held at the Nice Opera on April 23, 2013 under the chairmanship of Christian Estrosi, Deputy Mayor of Nice and President of Nice Côte Azur Metropolis.

From the late eighteenth century and more in the nineteenth century, the French Riviera even before becoming the Côte d’Azur, has based its development on its cosmopolitan attendance, particularly marked by the importance of the Russian resorts. Thus Nice, and more generally the French Riviera, has experienced a strong Russian community that no other city has matched by its importance and the impression it left. From the beginning, members of the imperial family played a major role in the installation of Russian in Nice. The Dowager Empress Alexandra Feodorovna, widow of Nicolas 1st came there in 1856. Alexander II and Empress Alexandrovna settled there in 1864. Their eldest son, the Tsarevich Nicolas died there. Later, Alexander III and his wife Maria Feodorovna continued regular visits. The first Russian Orthodox church was built in 1860, in Longchamp Street, then in 1912 the cathedral, near the monument erected in 1867 to commemorate the death of the young Tsarevich. Another group of Russian officials, including writers and artists such as Anton Chekhov or Marie Bashkirtseff, stayed in Nice during the second half of the nineteenth century. Villas, hotels and wintering sites preserve the memory of Russian life in Nice.

Vladimir Féderovsky

The evening opened on a conference by Vladimir Fédorovski who reminded the audience the historical link between Russia and France, evoking his own memories and shortly retracing the lives of some of the Romanov family he describes in his new book.
Vladimir Fédorovski was a diplomat during the biggest upheavals in the East. He is today the most published writer of Russian origin in France. His books written in French (including Le Roman du Kremlin and Le Roman de St. Petersburg) have become major international success, translated in 28 countries. In his new book, “Le Roman Des Tsars” (The Novel of Tsars), Vladimir Fédorovski comes back on the history of the Romanov dynasty that ruled Russia for 400 years: a long series of conspiracies and violence but also of exchanges with Europe. A saga of eternal Russia. Vladimir Fédorovski’s “Le Roman Des Tsars”  is published by Editions du Rocher (March 2013)

Mikhail Rudy

Mikhail Rudy succeded Mr Fédorovski with a piano recital showing all his talent and Russian soul. Mikhail Rudy was born in Russia. Student at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, he became a pianist of international renown. He has brilliantly performed Rachmaninoff Prelude, 4 Etudes by Scriabin and Prokofiev
