From 23rd to 30th September 2017, the 39th edition of the Régates Royales – Trophée Panerai will fill the bay of Cannes with the elegant sails of classic yachts.
In the early days of autumn, the gorgeous Bay of Cannes will play host to the graceful evolutions of the Régates Royales – Trophée Panerai, a unique and majestic gathering of classical yachts combining aesthetics, history and sportsmanship. Classic yachts, Traditional sailing boats, metric classes, Dragon and Tofinou will elegantly deploy their finest sails between the Croisette and the Lerins islands, along the Plages du Midi to Théoule, to offer an elegant, magical and exceptional spectacle.
Competitive spirit and conviviality
The last century’s most famous yachts, from the smallest, Arcadia, to the biggest, Cambria, come to battle in fierce regattas. Emotion will still be present this year with no less than 150 classic and tradition yachts announced for fiery gentlemen exchanges on the water along the Lerins Islands, in the legend of the distinguished yachting of the Roaring Twenties. The most beautiful and the biggest racing sailboats dating from 1892 like Marigold to that of the 70s, will be docked at Quai Laubeuf, offering their gracious lines in precious wood, before confronting in conviviality in the bay of Cannes and the Gulf of La Napoule on the large blue carpet of the Mediterranean for the feast of the eyes of lovers of the sea and old rigging.
Sailboats who wrote the history of yachting
The Régates Royales (Royal Regattas) were born in 1929 in honor of King Christian X of Denmark. Since 1979, they combine the classical yachts of the Great Blue, the Metric Classes and the Dragon.
The Royal Regattas are set up at the Vieux Port where spectators can admire the magnificent classic sailing ships that have been writting the nicest pages of yachting history for more than a century. Some of them are more than 100 years old: Marigold, Viola, Tuiga, Tern, Eva, Moonbeam of Fife and Moonbeam IV, Nan, Tigris, Oriole, Phoebus, Bona Fide…
The world’s best Dragons
Since their return to Cannes in 1987, the Dragons have always astonished and delighted the lovers of the beautiful regatta monotype. The Dragon, a sailboat often called “the kings’ sailboat or the king of the sailboats”, will be present for the 30th time, with fifty crews representing more than a dozen nations.
After spending the summer between Sweden, Italy, Great Britain, the Netherlands, France, Germany and Denmark, the Régates Royales is a tradition at the end of the season for the European Dragons. Depending on the weather conditions, the regattas can be carried out on one side or the other of the Croisette and the crews will have to adapt to a particularly technical water level between the bay of Cannes and Golfe Juan. The Régates Royales – Trophée Panerai attracts the best Dragonists of the moment for 4 days of intense and fierce regattas.
Sharing and festive atmosphere in the Village
From Monday 25th September to Sunday 31st September, the crews will take part in five exciting and relentless regattas between the Estérel massif and the Lérins Islands. They will meet in the evening at the Village of the Old Port to share in conviviality their emotions of the day around the many animations.
Installed on the Quai Laubeuf, the village of the Régates Royales –Trophée Panerai will be livened up after the return of the regattas by numerous activities and every evening animations.
For more than 11 years, the Yacht Club of Cannes has been organizing the Régates Royales –Trophée Panerai. The event enjoys the loyal support of the City of Cannes, which will once again be the essential partner of this gathering and of Panerai, the event’s main partner.
