The Truffle Market in Grasse and Le Rouret, on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10, next January, will celebrate 20 years of Black Diamond celebration.
On Saturday, January 9, 2016, the Truffle Market will open at La Bastide Saint Antoine of celebrity chef Jacques Chibois and will continue on Sunday, January 10 at Le Rouret. A unique opportunity to celebrate the Truffle, witness of the Art de Vivre and gorgeous landscapes of the Grasse basin.
This year will celebrate 20 years of dedication to the Black Diamond of Provence and efforts to promoting this mysterious fungus that grows under our feet.
Patronage of artist Gérard Garouste
The ideal terroir for the cultivation of truffles – which replaces the natural truffle threatened by drought in the summer – is at about 500m, consists of a limestone soil and must be irrigated. If these conditions are met, you can buy truffle oaks (mycorrhized with the queen of truffles, Tuber Melanosporum – the black truffle) at the Truffle Market and expect a delicious first harvest after 6-7 years. To wait, the Provençal market will offer fresh truffle and truffled dishes.
The 20th anniversary of the Truffle Market is under the sponsorship of the painter and sculptor Gérard Garouste who designed the poster.
Truffle Market at La Bastide Saint Antoine
At 9:30 am, the Provencal market welcomes lovers of truffles and local products at La Bastide Saint Antoine in Grasse of talented chef Jacques Chibois. On the program: sales of truffles, truffle dog demonstrations throughout the day, truffled egg scramble contest reserved for the public. A 17h: prize draw to win the day’s great contest with a basket full of all products on the market and 250g of Tuber Melanosporum truffle!
Gastronomic lunch by Jacques Chibois
From 11am, tasting of truffled dishes on the market place with “apéritif d’honneur” at 12:15. On the stand of the Syndicat des Trufficulteurs, the “Rabassiers” will introduce the truffle and give technical advice on its culture.
The “all truffle” gastronomic lunch prepared by Jacques Chibois will be the main event of this day celebrating the pleasures of the table and the art of living.
Truffle Festival at Le Rouret
The Truffle Market will continue the next day at Le Rouret, near Grasse. To discover the truffle cultivation “in situ”, Mayor of Le Rouret Gérard Lombardo organized guided tours of the experimental truffle field installed on the town from 9am to 12pm. Shuttle buses from the Town Hall will bring the public all morning.
At 15h, a conference on the truffle and its culture will reveal the production potential in the Alpes Maritimes before the demonstration of a truffled dish by starred chef Daniel Ettlinger from Le Clos Saint Pierre in Le Rouret.
Truffle-growing in the Maritime Alps
The Truffle, promise of treat, opens to the general public and became an agricultural activity that makes of Provence the most important truffle region in France with more than half of the national production. The 7,700 hectares – including 300 in the Alpes Maritimes – produced 28 tons last season. The Alpes Maritimes department, for its soils and climate, offers a strong potential for development and aims at the 1,000 hectares of plantation. Global demand is growing and countries like China, New Zealand, Australia, Chile, Argentina … are opening up to the Tuber Melanosporum consumption.
Truffles and winter tourism
The truffle, its culture at the foot of oaks, the landscapes it shapes and the gastronomy it inspires, are the subject of a true winter tourism.
The 20th Truffle Market will last throughout the week by gastronomic animations in the villages of Grasse basin and Truffle Festivals in various cities of the French Riviera. The development of Truffle tourism has led to the creation of a brand, “La Provence de la Truffe” that each partner of a Truffle Road – in the process of being set up – will display.
The first Bal de la Truffe
To celebrate in style the 20th anniversary of the Truffle Market, the first Bal de la Truffe will crown the festivities on January 16, 2016 at the salons of the CUBE Receptions in Grasse thanks to Mayor of Grasse Jérôme Viaud. Jacques Chibois and Michel Santinelli dreamed for 20 years of a renowned event associated with truffles and the prestigious dinner will be followed by a dance, accompanied by a charity event whose benefits will go to the Fondation des Dames de Lenval to treat sick children, chaired by Christiane Scoffier.
Jacques Chibois and Daniel Ettlinger will offer a splendid “all truffle”dinner.

A sumptuous lunch with Truffle
The presentation of the 20th Truffle Market was held at La Bastide Saint Antoine in the presence of chef Jacques Chibois, Jérôme Viaud – Mayor of Grasse, Gérard Lombardo – Mayor of Rouret, Michel Santinelli – President of the Regional Federation of Truffle Growers in Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur and Auguste Oddo, President of the Union of Truffle Growers in Alpes-Maritimes.
The presentation of the celebrations of the 20th Truffle Market ended with a sumptuous all-tuffle lunch concocted by Jacques Chibois.
