At TFWA-WE in Cannes, the Maison Camus in Cognac launched the Extra Dark & Intense, a rich and bold expression of its Extra Elegance Cognac.
15 years ago, Cognac Camus launched the Extra Elegance, an ambitious cognac whose contemporary design has marked the history of Cognac. Consolidating its leadership of a high-end category of which he is a pioneer, Camus challenges the limits of audacity with a version Extra Dark & Intense.
The absolute transparency of a carafe
One of the precursors of the duty-free market and today still a leader in high-end cognacs, Camus has strengthened its presence and expanding its range by launching in 2 000 Camus Extra Elégance, that shook up the traditional codes of cognac through the bold shapes of its carafes displaying the purest appearance. The absolute transparency of a carafe with clean forms was now paying tribute to the exceptional blend it contains.
Highlighted by the many awards received, Extra reveals this year its dark side with the Extra Dark & Intense version.
A rich and audacious expression of Extra
Cyril Camus, who represents the fifth generation and directs the Maison Camus in Cognac, is breaking new ground with Extra Dark & Intense. Starting from the idea to propose a spicy and intense version of Extra as one works on a richer fragrance in perfumes, Patrick Léger, Maître de Chai of Maison Camus, has selected some eaux-de-vie – but also the barrels containing them – on the basis of very specific characteristics.
Re-toasted barrels
The barrels undergo a very specific aging process: each selected barrel is withdrawn carefully and opened by the Maître Tonnelier to be re-toasted, thus regenerating its full aromatic potential.
At the end of this delicate and thorough, tailor-made, performed barrel by barrel operation, the barrels are filled with their original Cognac for a special finish stage in which the Cognac will acquire all its complexity. a A new expression of Extra, a rich and spicy, more aromatic and intense variation, but equally racy and pure. This today unveiled Extra couldn’t be named differently than Dark & Intense.
A rich and powerful aromatic experience
Patrick Léger explains how he has developed a exclusive technology for this cognac to offer a rich and powerful aromatic experience. “It was first necessary to select the most appropriate eaux-de-vie, extract them in the ageing process, open the 340-liter barrels to regenerate their full aromatic potential and expose them to open flame at a controlled temperature. This delicate and thorough operation is performed by hand, barrel by barrel. The expertise of the Maître Tonnelier determines the duration and degree of burning to get the best harmony with the cognac.”
The flame made them reborn
“The casks are then filled with their original Cognac. The assembly will then slowly increase its spicy aromas tenfold. Only the tasting, performed every day, is allowing us to decide to stop the phase of “finish” when the cognac has definitely taken its unique character,” the cellar master of Cognac Camus says.
Each barrel dedicated to Extra Dark & Intense is identified and closed with a golden bung whose light and warmth recalls the flame that made them reborn.
Tasting Notes
The robe is sparkling with mahogany and topaz reflections. The nose is strong and powerful, expressing notes of crème brûlée, gingerbread and roasted macadamia nuts.
The palate shows itself intense, bearing creamy and buttery notes, with a robust and lingering finish, marked by notes of subtly spicy bitter chocolate.
Dark and intense – like the cognac carafe it contains – the carafe dresses in mystery. It has the appearance of a black lacquered monolith, topped by a neck ring and a gold color cap referring to the flame the process of the “toasting” process.
