The 71st Festival de Cannes (Cannes Film Festival) is open: after a glamorous Red Carpet studded with international stars, the Opening Ceremony kicked off the competition of the 71st Cannes International Film Festival, with the screening of Everybody Knows by Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi.
Last year, the Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi (Award for Best Actor and Screenplay with The Salesman in 2016) declared opened the 70th Festival de Cannes in a one-night couple with actress Lily-Rose Depp (Vanessa Paradis and Johnny Depp‘s daughter). This year, his new film, Everybody Knows (Todos Lo Saben), starring Pénélope Cruz, Javier Bardem and Ricardo Darin, was screened at the end of the Opening Ceremony to audience of VIP and stars in the Grand Auditorium Louis Lumière.
Awards unveiled on May 19
Under the presidency of Australian actress and producer Cate Blanchett, a jury of five women and four men from five continents will select among the twenty or so films in Official Competition, the winners of the various prizes, and will unveil the winners on May 19, who, as every year, will have fun to thwart all predictions.
Jury members of the 2018 Festival de Cannes are: Chang Chen, actor, China – Ava DuVernay, screenwriter, director, producer, USA – Robert Guédiguian, director, screenwriter, producer, France – Khadja Nin, author, composer, performer, Burundi – Léa Seydoux, actress, France – Kristen Stewart, actress, USA – Denis Villeneuve, director, screenwriter, Canada – Andrey Zvyagintsev, director, scriptwriter, Russia.
Cate Blanchett, an engaged actress
Along her 24-year career, Cate Blanchett, a faithfull star of Festival de Cannes, has made 55 films, the best-known of which are Woody Allen‘s Blue Jasmine, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu‘s Babel, Martin Scorsese‘s The Aviator, Carol by Todd Haynes, David Fincher‘s The Curious Case of Benjamin Button… The actress with the two Oscars is UN Ambassador for Refugees.
Cannes Fait le Mur
Earlier in the morning, David Lisnard, Mayor of Cannes, inaugurated the fifteenth edition of Cannes Fait le Mur, unveiling the photo installed on the pediment of the Cannes City Hall. Partner of the exhibition, Paris Match has selected 18 portraits of stars in black and white and in color from the 15 million photos of its photo library. These monumental photographs are scattered around the city, displayed on the walls, or stretched on the gabled walls of buildings and the Train Station, as well as on banners along the Rue d’Antibes. These strong images of cinema, of personalities having distinguished themselves both in the cinema and in series, a nod to the first edition of Canneseries, will offer a part of dream and glamor to the passers-by until August 31st, 2018.
