The 33rd edition MIPCOM in Cannes rolled out the red carpet from 16 to 20 October 2017 for Russia, country of honor and a host of international stars.
MIPCOM, the essential global event for producers of programs and television channels, had a very strong attendance this year. As every autumn for 33 years, more than 14,000 participants came to Cannes for four days of exchanges, meeting, viewing or promoting series.
Creating a new world of content
MIPCOM 2017 brought together 4,800 buyers including 1,600 VOD and digital platforms buyers from more than 100 countries, as well as leading TV and film executives who came to create a new world of content. Among the 2,019 participating companies were the giants Netflix and Amazon, Youku, Hulu, Maxdome, Stan and Iflix, KKTV, Acorn TV, PlayKids and Showmax. The stars who liven up the screens also had an appointment on the Red Carpet organized in their honor on the Croisette at the Carlton Hotel.
A dozen world premieres
This year, a dozen new TV series from around the world presented to buyers as world premiere in the presence of actors.
A century after the October revolution, MIPCOM honored Russia with an important program titled: Russian Content Revolution. This program, rich in conferences and networking events, enabled representatives of the international television industry to discover the best of the new content produced by Russia. Two world premieres have unveiled series of very high quality: Trotsky, a biopic dedicated to the father of the October Revolution, played by Konstantin Khabensky and Olga Sutulova and Gogol Origins, a series that will soon plunge viewers into the fantastic universe of Ukrainian fairy tales.
The biggest drug trafficker in history
MIPCOM was also marked by the launch of Britannia. This British historical series on the resistance to the Roman invasion set in 43 AD, starring Kelly Reilly (The Spanish Inn) and David Morrissey (The Walking Dead).
The main star of the 2017 edition was undoubtedly Catherine Zeta-Jones, who came to present Cocaine Godmother, a series by A + E Networks, in which she plays “the greatest drug trafficker in history”. Chance of the programming, the actress met in Cannes Pablo Escobar’s son, Juan Pablo, present for the promotion of a documentary on his father.
Gordon Ramsey’s (g)astronomic success
As for the delicious reality shows, MIPCOM 2017 has hosted the star of TV culinary shows, the most famous chef on the small screen, Gordon Ramsey, who celebrated 25 years of culinary and audiovisual success. A 7 Michelin star chef and owner of 31 restaurants around the world, Gordon Ramsey hosts 7 shows on Fox US alone. This exceptional chef, nominated for the Emmy Awards TV, came to present his new production company, Studio Ramsey, created in partnership with AII3Média International.
MIPJunior at JW Marriott Cannes
The MIPJunior, which took place in the salons of the JW Marriott Cannes hotel, also broke attendance records with more than 1,600 participants including more than 630 buyers who viewed 1,200 programs. 260 projects in development were presented to potential partners.
Some episodes of new series premiered, like Thomas & Friends: Big World! Big Adventures! Produced and distributed by Mattel Creations, the animated series, aimed at 3-year-olds, tells the story of a colorful locomotive named Thomas. The hero of this series takes children on the rails of fabulous epics around the world, meeting new friends and discovering new cultures and countries that will arouse the curiosity of young spectators.
Keynotes and conferences
Sir Lenny Henry, British comedian, author, multi-award-winning actor, and long-time activist of charity and diversity action, was on October 18 in the Grand Auditorium of the Palais des Festivals for a keynote as part of the Diversity Program. Extending this year over two day, the Diversity Program marked the first edition of the Diversify TV International Excellence Awards, awarding the actors and supporters of the principles of diversity, equality and integration into the television industry. Concerning the conferences, social networks were particularly in the spotlight with the presence of senior officials of Snapchat and Facebook who mainly focused on their mobile content strategies.
CANNESERIES presented at MIPCOM
The MIPTV 2018 will serve as a springboard for CANNESERIES, the International Festival of Series. At MIPCOM, the Festival President Fleur Pellerin, Managing Director Benoit Louvet and Artistic Director Albin Lewi unveiled the program and introduced the first edition’s godmother, Danish actress Sidse Babett Knudsen. CANNESERIES will offer a projection program for the general public (CANNESERIES Addicts), an international competition with 10 series, a short form competition (CANNESERIES Digital) and, in partnership with MIPTV, a forum to accelerate the co-production projects.
